Don’t pop the question in the City of Love! Paris tops new study of ill-fated places to get engaged as researchers find 23% of divorced Britons tied the knot there

It has a reputation for romance and styles itself as the City of Love.

But anyone planning to propose to their partner during a Parisian getaway might want to think again: for the French capital has just topped a study of ill-fated places to get engaged.

Researchers quizzed 3,500 divorced Britons to find out where they popped the question – and 23 per cent of them had chosen Paris.

Reykjavik in Iceland and New York finished in second and third place, representing 18 per cent and 14 per cent of marriages ending in the divorce courts.

Anyone planning to propose to their partner during a Parisian getaway might want to think again: for the French capital has just topped a study of ill-fated places to get engaged

The top five was completed by Cardiff (11 per cent) and Vancouver (10 per cent).

Just one per cent of the couples who divorced had got engaged in the Mexican town of Tulum, on the Caribbean coastline, placing it bottom of the list.

A spokesman for radiator firm Stelrad, which carried out the study, said: ‘We wanted to find out where to get engaged to give your marriage the best chance of going the distance. We surveyed 3,500 people who got engaged while away from home and whose marriages had ended in divorce – and found 23 per cent had got engaged in Paris

‘It turns out the most romantic city in the world isn’t the best place to pop the question after all.’
