Police offer cigarettes in bid to ‘coax’ semi-naked man from top of giant crane after he climbed up to cabin, fell asleep then REFUSED to come down

  • Man dressed just in shorts started climbing crane at around 6.30 this morning
  • Witness said man had ‘demanded drugs, money and fags’ and police used cigarettes to try to get him down 

A man dressed only in a pair of shorts got stuck up a crane before ‘falling asleep in the cabin’ at a Kent building site – and rescuers are trying to ‘coax him down with cigarettes’.

Police officers, firefighters and paramedics are on the scene at the building site, in Folkestone, after they were alerted to reports of the man climbing the crane early this morning.

A witness said rescuers are trying to coax the man down from the crane with cigarettes after the man ‘demanded drugs, money, fags’ as he climbed up and down the enormous crane.

They said: ‘They are trying to coax him down with cigarettes. He was coming down slowly, climbing down a platform at a time as the crane frame is in sections.  

‘But he stopped and is now climbing back up to the crane cabin. 

Another said: ‘He keeps climbing up then down a little. Demanding drugs, money, fags. Then climbs a little higher. He had a near miss a minute ago.’

Later this morning, one witness told KentLive that rescuers suspected the man was asleep in the cabin. 

They said: ‘They think he is asleep in the cabin. They where shouting trying to wake him from the lift.’

At the building site on Tontine Street, where construction is taking place for a new skate park, the crane can be seen towering over an unfinished building below.

Police have closed surrounding streets as they speak to the man. 

In a video of the rescue operation, the man can be heard shouting from the crane.  

A spokesman for the police said: ‘Kent Police was called at around 6.30am to reports that a man was climbing a crane at that location. 

‘Officers have closed Tontine Street and Dover Road in Folkestone while they speak to a distressed man at a building site.

‘Drivers may wish to seek alternative routes while the roads remain closed.’
