Pregnant mum screamed for help to get her kids, 3 and 5, out of burning home as family critical, hero neighbours say

THREE heroes who desperately raced to rescue a pregnant mother and her two kids from a horror blaze have revealed how the mum screamed for help from the burning home.

A little girl, three, and boy, five, were hauled from the flames after their horrified mother's shouts alerted neighbours to the fire in Preston on Friday night.

The children are now fighting for life, with the mum, who is in her 20s, also taken to hospital after she managed to leap from a window to escape.

Hayden Wolstencroft and Demi-Lee Carroll, both 17, and family friend Gordon Simpson were the first at the scene of the inferno in Coronation Crescent.

Speaking to Sun Online, Demi-Lee said she raced to the scene while Hayden and Gordon smashed through garden fences to reach the back of the home.

She said: “I was in the street trying to get the mum to drop the kids down to me.

Hayden added: “When we were in the shop, there was nothing to see. Everything was normal.

“Within about three minutes, you could see flames and there was no way for the mum and babies to get out.

“The woman was hanging from her window screaming for help.

“I tried to get closer, but the flames were already smothering the house.”

The witnesses said both children were covered with soot and smoke as they were hauled from the burning building by firefighters.

And they say the dad then arrived home to find his children receiving CPR in the street.

Demi-Lee said: “He was screaming for his children.

"The emotion in his voice was just heartbreaking. It was the most horrific thing I’ve seen.”

HORROR FIRE

Hayden and Gordon smashed through a padlocked alley door before scaling onto the kitchen extension.

Gordon then booted through a back window in a desperate attempt to reach the little ones.

However, the smoke was so thick he and Hayden were driven back, despite three attempts to climb in.

Gordon, who suffers with asthma, was later rushed to hospital with breathing difficulties.

Demi-Lee and Hayden waited in the hospital for news until 2am.

"They said the babies are in a critical condition," Demi-Lee said.

He told of his pride in Hayden, who has just started working with him, as well as the shopkeeper who raced to the scene and scaled the extension roof with him.

"They were just brilliant," he said.

"The smoke was unreal when we got to the back of the house.

"I smashed in the window and pulled back the curtains. I was screaming, 'Come here', but I don't know if they could understand or hear me.

"Everything was black inside. I was overwhelmed by the smoke."

Cops are continuing to quiz a 24-year-old man on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

Detective Chief Inspector Graham Hill said: "Two children are in hospital with life-threatening injuries and first and foremost our thoughts are with them and their parents at this awful time.
