  • He uses the base of a wine glass to cut the top of the bottle clean away

This is the satisfying moment champagne is popped open when a reveller’s gentle tapping cracks the neck of the bottle.

Nikolaj Makar is at a friend’s birthday in Copenhagen’s Hotel d’Angleterre when he decides to saber off the top of a bottle of champagne.

He said: ‘I always liked sabering champagne, which is where you take a saber or any other object and hit the bottleneck so hard that it cracks off.’

Taking an empty wine glass in one hand he taps it against the neck of the bottle where the cork cage rests against the glass.

With the bottle sitting in a silver wine cooler just the edge of Nikolaj’s suit sleeve can be seen at he coolly taps the glass several times.

As pressure inside the bottle builds the glass is completely cracked and the entire top of the neck flies off in to the distance.

He said: ‘We set everything up so it looked nice and just began going at it and poof it came off, surprisingly there wasn’t really any reaction.’

Sabrage is a technique for opening a champagne bottle with a saber and is mostly used for ceremonial occasions.

The wielder slides the saber along the body of the bottle to break the top of the neck away, leaving the neck of the bottle open and ready to pour.

On his Instagram Nikolaj refers to himself as a ‘champagne enthusiast’ and can be seen drinking the famous sparkling wine in different locations.
