‘Don’t remember having a trampoline!’ Twitter is flooded with memes as Storm Bella scatters garden furniture and topples wheelie bins across the nation – with Britons left checking their roof tiles after a sleepless night

Twitter users mocked the ‘absolute carnage’ caused by Storm Bella as it battered the UK overnight, leaving hundreds without power.

Very strong winds and heavy rain whipped the UK coastline, particularly in parts of Wales and southern England, where severe gales caused damage to buildings around coastal and hilly areas. 

The Met Office said a gust of wind had been recorded at 83mph in the coastal village of Aberdaron in North Wales on Saturday night.  

However, some areas appeared largely unaffected with only the occasional bin or flower pot tipped over by high winds. 

One Twitter user shared a picture of an upturned garden chair with the message ‘absolute carnage’, while another wrote ‘Storm Bella just got real’ alongside a picture of an overturned flower pot.

One woman quipped that she had to check her house hadn’t been carried away to Oz like Dorothy in the classic film The Wizard of Oz, whose home was swept away to a magical land by a tornado

Many noted the wind and rain the storm whipped up, saying it was ‘a little windy’ or ‘quite windy’ 

Many joked about the high winds and lashing rain that caused new flood warnings to be put in place for Sunday.

‘Tad windy outside last night had to go out and check the house was still in the same place and had not landed in Oz,’ a woman wrote on Twitter.

She shared a picture of Dorothy’s house from the classic film The Wizard of Oz, which is blown away to a magical land during a tornado.

Another Twitter user in St. Neots, a town outside Cambridge where storm barriers were put up ahead of last night, shared an image of a cow flying through the air, noting that it was ‘quite windy’.  

Some Twitter users complained about a lack of sleep caused by the storm, with one sharing a meme of the weatherman from US TV show Family Guy

One woman on Twitter said she was ‘getting under [her] duvet’ as she urged others to ‘be safe’

A man in St. Neots, where storm barriers had been erected prior to last night, shared a picture of a cow flying through the air, joking that it was ‘quite windy in St. Neots this morning’

Parts of Wales and southern England, were particularly badly hit by the storm, with severe gales causing damage to buildings around coastal and hilly areas. 

Amid the storm, Brits showed particular concern for the fate of their furry friends, with one posting a picture of their cat hiding in a box to escape the loud thunder. 

Another Twitter user said the storm had now reached France and told followers to ‘watch out for yourself and your 4-legged friends’ in a post with a picture of a cat clinging onto a tree in high winds.

Others were more concerned about their roof tiles with one writing: ‘All across Kent there are people shuffling around outside in slippers and dressing gowns, squinting up at the roof. 

‘Each of us silently praying that Storm Bella has spared our tiles’.

Yellow warnings for rain are in place across much of the UK, with two ‘threat to life’ flood notices and a further 98 warnings and 171 alerts in patches across the England. 

Despite this, many chose to make light of the chaos wrought by the storm, with one saying: ‘No sleep, thanks Storm Bella’.

Another was shocked to find that not only was her garden fence still intact but she appeared to have gained a trampoline.

‘Morning after the storm…fence still up…although I don’t recall ever owning a trampoline,’ she wrote, alongside a picture of the new addition to her garden.

One woman was relieved to find her garden fence intact but also discovered that she’d gained a trampoline overnight

Along with the stormy conditions continuing into Sunday, temperatures are expected to remain frosty in some part of the country into next week, leading health professionals to offer advice on how to keep safe in colder weather.

Dr Ishani Kar-Purkayastha, consultant in public health at Public Health England said: ‘Heat your home to at least 18C if you can, particularly if you have reduced mobility, are 65 and over, or have a health condition such as heart or lung disease.’ 

Many complained of getting no sleep thanks to the rain and wind, which hit 83mph, according to the Met Office

One Twitter user checked in on their followers, asking ‘Did we all survive the storm’

Another joked that the storm may have been a sign that nature wasn’t pleased with the Brexit agreement recently reached between the UK and Europe

Another shared a picture of a man covered in tinsel and Christmas lights, joking that they had blown in from the neighbour’s garden
