UK weather forecast – Met Office raises Storm Dennis warning to AMBER as 75mph wind and floods to be ‘worse than Ciara’ – The Sun

BRITAIN faces a floody Valentine's weekend as Storm Dennis is set to drench some parts of the UK with over 130mm of rain.

Before Storm Dennis brings 72 hours of disruption this weekend, a severe frost is expected to cover the snow in northern England and Scotland tonight.

Severe weather warnings for wind and rain have been issued for many parts of the UK, including amber warnings for rain in south west England, southern Wales, north west England and south east England as the country continues its recovery from Storm Ciara.

The Met Office said: “Storm Dennis isn't expected to be quite as windy as Ciara, but rainfall could be more problematic.”

Dennis is due to bring a month’s worth of rain in just 24 hours.

Some 120-140mm of rain has been forecast for parts of the south west, south east, north west and South Wales.

Over the weekend wind gusts will widely exceed 50mph, even across some inland areas, with gusts of over 60mph possible over hills, coastal areas and exposed locations.

While these winds have the potential to bring impacts they are not as strong as the gusts we saw last weekend with Storm Ciara, when a gust of 97mph was recorded on the Isle of Wight.

The Weather Company, the world's biggest commercial forecaster, said: “Dennis could rival the most intense North Atlantic storms on record.

“The lower the pressure, the more intense the storm, increasing the likelihood of strong winds.”

While Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna said: “Models hint Dennis could have low pressure from 915mb to 930mb. The record depth for a North Atlantic low pressure system is 913mb.

They added: “Dennis is menacing.”

Dennis is menacing

Storm Dennis is expected to bring delays and cancellations to transport services, damage to power supplies and large coastal waves.

This devastation hits the UK just one week after Storm Ciara which lead to the deaths of three people and wrecked more than 500 homes.

One BMW owner was devastated when his prized car, which he had parked by the Thames, was swept away by a freak tidal surge following heavy rain.

James Roycroft-Davis, a 25-year-old business owner, could only watch aghast as his BMW Z4 floated away.

He managed to recover it later that day but says the car is a "total write-off".

James said he had visited Putney in southwest London on Wednesday to see his girlfriend at about 2pm, and came back to where he parked the car around 4.30pm to find it missing.
