Dramatic moment house explodes in gas blast: Windows are blown out and the roof is ripped off before blaze rips through terraced home and leaves four injured

This is the horrifying moment an explosion caused by a suspected gas leak ripped through a house and two flats, leaving four injured. 

The fire broke out on Wednesday in a residential area of Winsford, Cheshire.

Dramatic footage shows the explosion erupting through the roof of the house, blowing the windows out and sending roof tiles flying.

Further footage shows flames engulfing the property as thick grey smoke billows above.

Cheshire Police said that two casualties were rushed to hospital and surrounding homes were evacuated.

North West Ambulance Service said the other two casualties were treated at the scene and none of the injuries were life-threatening. 

Cheshire Police said: ‘At around 1.40pm on Wednesday 22 March, emergency services were called to reports of a large fire at an address on Abbotts Way, Winsford.

‘Police and fire attended the scene and on arrival the property was well alight.

‘Firefighters are working hard to tackle the fire and a number of roads in the area are closed, these include Abbotts Way, Nixon Drive and Ashton Avenue.

‘A number of properties in the area have been evacuated and a temporary shelter has been set up at the New Images Youth Centre for residents affected.

‘Four people have been injured as a result of the incident, their injuries are not believed to be life threatening.’

The force told MailOnline today: ‘Enquiries in relation to the cause of the fire remain ongoing at the current time. No arrests have been made.’ 

On Wednesday the local school, Winsford Academy, said in a statement: ‘We have been informed of a recent explosion close to the school grounds. I would just like to confirm that all of our children are safe, in lessons and are well.

‘Some students have found the situation upsetting, however, we have provided support for those individuals.’
