What time is today's, June 22, coronavirus press briefing and who is chairing it?

CORONAVIRUS press briefings are the government’s way of updating the public on how officials are tackling the spread of Covid-19.

Members of parliament, as well as experts in science, technology and more take questions from the media and British residents during these conferences.

What time is today's coronavirus briefing?

The coronavirus press briefing on June 22 will commence at 4.30pm and it is expected to end at 6pm. 

Since March 23 the conferences have been held at Downing Street following the coronavirus pandemic.

These briefings are intended to provide the public with the latest information regarding Covid-19, and how the government and its advisers intend to reduce its spread and return the country to some normality.

They take place on weekdays only after the government ditched the weekend briefings. .

Who are today's speakers?

A range of people speak at the briefings but usually one member of parliament is accompanied by two experts in either the field of science, health, technology, education or business.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock will host today’s (June 22) conference and is expected to fill the nation in on the latest coronavirus figures.

Senior Conservative MPs such as Rishi Sunak, Dominic Raab and Gavin Williamson have chaired past conferences.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has also hosted a number of briefings in the past but occasionally passes on this duty to members of his party.

Experts at these briefings have included Professor Chris Whitty, the Chief Medical Officer, and top scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance.

Meanwhile, Professor Jonathan Van Tam, Dr Jenny Harries and NHS's national medical director for England, Stephen Powis have joined on numerous occasions.
