Hollyoaks spoilers: Joel discovers Mercedes’ hit and run secret and gives her an ultimatum – tell her family or he’ll go to the police – The Sun

HOLLYOAKS' Joel Dexter will discover Mercedes McQueen's dark hit and run secret and give her the chance to come clean to her family before he tells the police.

In an upcoming episode the vicar, played by Rory Douglas-Speed, will get his hands on the late Harry Thompson's phone, that contains damning evidence against Mercedes.

The former footballer [Parry Glasspool] was knifed to death by serial killer Breda McQueen in the summer for abandoning his newborn son in the hospital.

However, in the days before his murder he recorded Mercedes confess to the fatal hit and run that killed Grace Black – a crime that Harry had been charged for.

Before he could make the discovery public, he was tracked down on the way back to see his child by Breda.

She stepped in front of him and brutally stabbed him leaving him staring at her in shock.

She said: "I'm a protector of God's children and one way or another you'd have ruined that child's life. I've met a lot of dad's like you. They always meet a stick end. Deadbeat dads don't deserve to live."

Harry called out for his dad with his dying breath but no-one came to help, and his death has sent shock waves through soap fans.

Hollyoaks boss Bryan Kirkwood defended the decision to kill such a big character.

Speaking exclusively to The Sun Online, he said: "We do not kill off characters of Harry's standing and legacy without really working out if it's worth it.

"What I've learned over the years is that sometimes killing a much-loved character can give other characters a new lease of life, and we are desperately sad to see the back of Harry and of Parry.

"It turns out that Parry was thinking about moving on and we felt that after the tumultuous last couple of years with the Amy Barnes story and the Starry and Jarry love triangle that it was time to take some characters in a different direction.

"Harry's death at the hands of Breda will take Tony and James, two hugely popular characters into really exciting new territory."

He added: "Sometimes taking one of the most loved characters and doing the most unexpected thing can be ultimately the best decision for a show like Hollyoaks.

"Over the years I think our audience has felt serial killer fatigue when the killers have bumped off periphery characters, actors they knew were leaving.

"I've occasionally rolled my own eyes at us following the same pattern with some of our serial killers, and it was time to make sure that if we were going to have that genre of story in the show with a brilliant unique and original character like Breda that what she does has massive impact and shocks the audience to their core."

Speaking about his departure, actor Parry added: "My time at Hollyoaks has been a rollercoaster, which  has helped me grow both as a performer and a person.

"I’m so grateful to have worked with and learnt from the likes of Nick Pickard, Kieron Richardson and Gregory Finnegan, whose combined experience has been invaluable to me.

"Thank you also to our executive producer Bryan Kirkwood who gives us all so much support, it’s been brilliant to be part of the Hollyoaks team. “As a side note, I really do hope someone, anyone finds out what Breda has been doing – because now it’s personal…"
