My fiancé dumped me by text after we’d planned our wedding – but I became a mum via sperm donor and don’t regret a thing – The Sun
WEDDING venue and honeymoon booked, dress bought, and just six months before the big day bride-to-be Jade Edgington was dumped – by text.
But the 30-year-old decided to pursue her dream of becoming a mum, figuring she didn’t need a man.
Now, thanks to a sperm donor and IVF, she has eight-month-old daughter Eden and would not change a thing.
Business development manager Jade said: “My life was going to plan. I was going to get married and start a family.
“But out of nowhere, my fiancé changed his mind and broke up with me via text.
“Despite everything, I was still focused on becoming a mum, even if it meant doing it alone.”
She added: “I love every second of it and don’t have any regrets.”
Jade’s fiancé had proposed to her in August 2017, when they had been an item for less than a year.
The couple booked their wedding for July 2018 and began preparing.
Jade, from Birmingham, said: “I had bought my dress and we had paid for half of the wedding venue and our honeymoon to Bali and Thailand, which all came to around £8,000.
“But then, with six months to go, he got cold feet. My world came crashing down.”
Over the next four months, Jade did a lot of soul-searching — and holidaying.
She said: “I went to Spain three times in 2018, with family and friends.
"Then I went to Morocco with pals and chilled by the pool.
“But throughout all of this, I kept thinking about wanting to become a mum.”
Jade has polycystic ovary syndrome, which can cause irregular ovulation, and had been told by doctors she might struggle to conceive.
She said: “I knew from a young age that having PCOS meant I would probably have to have IVF. My ex had been fine about going through this.
“But being single, I now needed to find a sperm donor. I felt it was easier for me to have a child without the hassle of meeting someone who isn’t right for me.”
Guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence state that single women are generally not eligible for IVF on the NHS.
So Jade started looking abroad, and a friend recommended Spain.
A lot of research later and Jade picked the Manzanera fertility clinic.
In August, 2018 she had her first consultation, via Skype. She then went ahead with the £7,000 IVF treatments, paying from her savings.
She said: “The clinic matched my characteristics to a sperm donor.
"I didn’t get to choose, they simply searched their system to find the closest match to me. In October 2018, my eggs were collected.
“On the morning of November 9, I sneaked into the bathroom I shared with my sister Amber, to do a pregnancy test. I hadn’t told anyone but my dad Brian about the IVF.
"So when I then told Amber the test showed I was pregnant, she was shocked. I was crying with tears of happiness but she didn’t believe me until I showed her the test — then she was as excited as me.”
Eden was born last July, weighing 5lb 14oz, at Birmingham’s Heartlands Hospital.
Jade had been induced, with best pal Holly and mum Karen, by her side. She said: “When I heard, ‘It’s a girl!’ I couldn’t stop crying and saying, ‘She’s mine!’
“There had been many bumps in the road leading to motherhood and I feel lucky to have been successful.
"I will be honest with her about everything as soon as she can understand. Eden will know she was born out of pure love and joy.”
