Mum lists baby son’s coronavirus symptoms – and urges all parents to watch out – The Sun

A MUM whose baby son tested positive for coronavirus has shared his symptoms as she urged parents to be on alert.

Toni Rhodes, who lives near Basildon, Essex, said she noticed seven-week-old Curtis seemed "agitated" and had a different cry to usual.

He was also extremely fatigued and not fidgeting in his sleep as he usually does.

In the morning, his skin was mottled and one of his eyes was red, swollen and watering.

He had also developed a slight cough and was sneezing periodically.

The worried mum, along with husband Ken, decided to take him to A&E at lunchtime last Monday.

She said that doctors initially thought his slightly raised temperature and fast heart rate was sepsis.

He was given antibiotics and the family were asked to stay in hospital for 48 hours while they awaited the results of some blood tests.

Curtis was also given a coronavirus test – as the majority of hospital patients are – but his parents were told that this would take a few days to come back.

Once medics were happy he had made some improvements, the infant was given three antibiotic injections and sent home on Wednesday.

But the following day, Toni received a call to say that Curtis had tested positive for Covid-19.

Warning

Writing on Facebook to warn other parents, Toni said: "Since being home though Curtis has improved…he is now just showing signs that I would describe as getting over the last dregs of a cold.

"His temperature is lower (35.x) and he isn't feeding at night, however as soon as he's up in the day he's back to his almost usual self.

"He sounds dry and congested, pooing more than usual and is clingy but everything else ok.

"He has not needed medication since being home.

He did not have a high temperature or dry persistent cough

"We have been reassured that Curtis should be fine, however to take him back to A&E if he gets shortness of breath.

"To confirm he did not have a high temperature or dry persistent cough.

"As we all know there is little knowledge on babies and their reactions to the virus so we want to share to make others aware what they could also be needing to look out for."

She added: "Ken and I are not showing any of the signs we are told to look out for… We would describe ourselves as feeling run down and under the weather.

"Main symptoms would be headache, loss of smell, backache and a slight sore throat, however all manageable without any medication and nothing to write home about.

"We are sharing our story to give parents the reassurance that babies can and will be ok."

In an update posted on Saturday, Toni thanked people for their support and said they had been asked how Curtis caught the virus.

She said: "The truth is how does anyone get it? Ken and I are showing symptoms however have not been and won't be tested the same as everyone else unless admitted to hospital.

"I stayed with Curtis for two nights in hospital and wasn't tested.

"It's probably more likely that he caught it from one of us, but there is no point in speculating."

She added: "Please please please if you think your child is unwell, take them to A&E as you would have if all this hell was not in our lives.

"So many parents could be leaving it too late and are not going to hospital just in case their child does not have the virus but catches it there."
