The Good Doctor season 4: Who is leaving the series? Showrunner confirms another exit
Fans of The Good Doctor were left devastated when the series killed off Dr Neil Melendez (played by Nicholas Gonzalez) in a heartbreaking storyline. However, it now seems the drama is not over with showrunner David Shore revealing another major character on the show will not be returning – Dr Carly Lever (Jasika Nicole).
Why is Dr Carly Lever leaving The Good Doctor?
While viewers are still reeling from the season three finale, which saw Melendez killed off, there have been plenty more reveals about the future of the series.
This includes reports from showrunner David Shore suggesting he will also not be bringing back Carly as a major character.
Fans will remember she had a huge storyline in season three when Carly started dating Dr Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore).
Then things took a turn for the worse between them after Shaun seemingly became interested in Lea Dilallo (Paige Spara).

This led to a heartbreaking split between Carly and Shaun before she told him to go and pursue Lea.
After this, Carly did not appear much in the final few episodes of the series, and it has now been confirmed she will not be returning as a regular.
Shore told TV Line: “I would love to have her back here and there.
“I love Jasika, and would love to see her on the show, but it will not be in the same capacity.”
She first joined the show back in season two as a recurring role in the ABC drama.
However, she was promoted to a series regular in the third season after her storyline with Shaun began.
The news comes after Nicole spoke to Good Housekeeping about what she hoped was next for Carly on the show.
She told the publication: “So far, we really only know Carly through the lens of Shaun.
“I am really excited and hope to see Carly interacting with other people in the cast outside of that dynamic and learning more about her with other people.
“I love it when [they] write scenes with Carly and Morgan. Those women, in particular, are such an interesting pair.”
This could still be possible down the line but it seems likely it will be in a smaller amount of scenes.

As he spent time with a dying patient, he came to the conclusion he should move away and be with his family.
Season four has been commissioned by ABC, but there’s uncertainty whether the outbreak of coronavirus COVID-19 will affect when the series will air.

Shore confirmed in an interview with Deadline how he and his team were planning to work together remotely to begin writing season four.
On how the new season will be impacted, he explained: “Look, this is a challenge for society.
“Our little challenges are so trivial by comparison, but yes, we will have to make some decisions about that, and I think, to some extent, live in that reality.
“But we don’t know what that reality is going to be. You know, when the writers meet in April and May and June to discuss episodes that will be on the air in September, October and November, things are changing so fast that it’s kind of impossible to know.”
The Good Doctor season 4 is expected to return later in 2020.
