Kurt Cobain’s sweater fetches $75K at auction
One of the coolest cardigans in pop culture history — a gray thrift store gem worn by Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain — sold for $75,000 in Manhattan over the weekend, according to a Los Angeles auction house.
The acrylic and mohair sweater, sported by the grunge rock legend during a photo shoot in the Big Apple in September 1993, was snapped up by a mystery buyer Saturday at Hard Rock Café in Times Square, Julien’s Auctions said.
The band photo shoot with Jesse Frohman was for the album “In Utero” — and Cobain’s last before his suicide the following year.
“[It] was meant to take place in Central Park … but due to Cobain being sick just hours before, the shoot was relocated to the basement of the hotel where the band was staying,” a description of the piece notes on the Julien’s Auctions website. “Cobain showed up three hours late to the shoot and immediately asked for a bucket due to his nausea.”
The rocker’s wife, Courtney Love, later gave the size medium sweater to “an acquaintance” at his funeral.
On Saturday, the piece sold for more than three times its original estimate of $20,000, the auction house said.
A used paper plate that Cobain ate pizza on then scrawled a set list on in black marker also sold for $22,000.
The moss-colored sweater worn by the tortured genius during his famous “MTV Unplugged in New York” set in 1993 sold for $140,800 in 2015.
