Man absolutely ‘livid’ after girlfriend’s dad ruins his perfect proposal
A day at the beach, a meal at their favourite restaurant, watching the sunset from the pier – it all sounds like the recipe for a perfect proposal.
And it was.
One couple enjoyed their special day, which ended with the boyfriend getting down on one knee and asking his girlfriend to spend the rest of her life with him.
She was "over the moon" and the pair spent the next few hours basking in their happiness.
Only for it to be absolutely ruined two days later when they told her parents the big news.
In a post on Reddit's Am I The A**hole forum, a man going by the username nohope4mee, revealed how after five years with his partner, he decided to pop the question.
This happened on a Friday night and he claims the pair spent the weekend trying to get through to her parents to announce their engagement.
After failing to talk to them on the phone, they decided to head over to the house and tell them in person.
But when they dropped the bombshell, they soon discovered their excitement wasn't reciprocated.
The woman's father simply reprimanded the young man for not asking his permission for his daughter's hand in marriage.
"He decides I need to redo the proposal at a large family get together next week and publicly ask 'to talk to him' before doing so and then propose in front of her whole family," he explained.
"I wouldn't mind that much, but this will basically erase our previous, perfect, real proposal with a fake proposal to suit his desires."
He added that he was considering going along with the whole thing, but he's "livid" that the older man "f***ed up [the] perfect engagement weekend" for his personal preference.
Hundreds of people commented on the man's post, sending him supportive messages and agreeing that the dad was in the wrong.
One person said: "The dad is the a**hole, but for the sake of peace I would ask your fiancée. Does she want to stand her ground with you and keep your private proposal? Would she prefer you to do a public proposal? Whatever you decide, if the two of you are a united front then the family can't do anything."
Another user thought that it was "sexist" the dad wanted him to conform to an "archaic tradition in line with the thought of ownership of the daughter".
A third wrote: "Imagine down the road when (and if) you guys have kids. I can bet your father-in-law will want a whole charade made for the announcement of the pregnancy. I wouldn't redo the proposal."
