Meghan Markle to Matt Cardle: Hey U Up 4 Netflix & Chill? LOLs
For a week or two after Meghan Markle gave birth to her first child, the British press called a truce and gave their favorite punching bag a break.
But don’t let anyone tell you all European nations have more enlightened maternity leave policies than we do, because Meg’s respite is officially over, and the UK media trolls are going harder than ever in their efforts to tear down the Duchess of Sussex.
This time, the plan of attack involves a former X Factor contestant named Matt Cardle.
According to two-ply tabloid The Sun, Meghan was briefly involved in an online flirtation with Cardle several months before she met Harry.
A source tells the paper that Meghan and Matt connected on Instagram and a friendship quickly developed:
“Matt followed Meghan initially in early 2015 because he thought she was a beautiful star from Suits,” says the insider.
“But he was stunned when she followed him immediately back and started messaging him. She said she was a big fan of his work.”
So Matt responded the way anyone would upon receiving a message from Meg.
But then, the whole thing just sort of fizzled out, as is the case with roughly 99 percent of budding social media-based romances.
“Matt couldn’t believe a Hollywood star like Meghan would even know who he was so he was very flattered and they chatted a little bit online before she suggested meeting up,” says the insider.
“But then he met his girlfriend and knew it wasn’t appropriate to keep talking to Meghan so he ended up ghosting her. It felt like there could have been a connection but the timing was wrong. He didn’t reply to her last message.”
The implication is as clear as it is dumb:
Obviously, The Sun is suggesting that Meghan was this close to getting together with Matt and ruining her relationship with Harry before it even began.
This, despite the fact that Meg and Matt never even met IRL.
And that’s not the only time The Sun delved into Meg’s romantic past this week.
The popular birdcage-liner also ran an interview with Lizzie Cundy, a British TV host and former acquaintance of Meg’s who revealed that the duchess has long had an affinity for British men.
“We were having a girly chat and then she said, ‘Do you know any famous guys? I’m single and I really love English men,’” Cundy recalled.
“So I said, ‘We’ll go out and find you someone.’”
That story might have been interesting if the “someone” she’d found turned out to be Harry.
Instead, Cundy tried to set Meghan up with Ashley Cole, a soccer player who’s best known on this side of the pond for his relationship with Cheryl Cole.
Obviously, that didn’t work out, but Cundy only has fond memories of hanging out with Meghan.
“Meghan’s so relaxed, she liked a drink, great fun,” Cundy tells The Sun.
With everything that’s happening in the press this week, we hope Meg is enjoying a drink at this very moment.
