Raj and his co-stars were known as some of the geekiest characters on TV throughout The Big Bang Theory’s 12 season tenure on CBS. Despite their nerdy tendencies, the characters still found some success with the ladies, although one fan claims Raj and his girlfriend Emily were treated unfairly by the writers.

Rajesh Koothrappali (played by Kunal Nayyar) was infamous for his bad luck with relationships, although his best friend and bumbling womaniser Howard Wolowitz (Simon Helberg) often gave him a run for his money.

Thankfully, Howard was eventually reined in by his girlfriend and later wife Bernadette (Melissa Rauch), although Raj was unfortunately not so lucky.

The series has received some backlash from fans who were disappointed Raj was never able to land a long-term love interest.

Fans believed this was about to change when the series introduced Emily, a quirky dermatologist and horror movie fan who gets in touch with Raj via a dating site.

Although Emily was a sustained presence in the series throughout seasons seven to ten, she was dumped in season nine in order for Raj to pursue Claire (Alessandra Torresani).

He later reveals he has been juggling both ladies at the same time, though this situation quickly falls apart in season 10.

Despite his bad luck with romance at the start of the season, Raj has actually had more romantic partners than most of his Big Bang Theory co-stars.

Even though the impossibly geeky Howard (Simon Helberg) and even Sheldon (Jim Parsons) were eventually married, Raj stays single, although he’s seen in the finale with actress Sarah Michelle Gellar.

One fan took to Reddit to argue why Emily should have remained on the series and joined Bernadette, Amy (Mayim Bialik) and Penny (Kayley Cuoco) as part of the main female cast.

Redditor HarryXXV posted: “They were a perfectly fine couple with little to no problems but suddenly broke them up by having Raj fall hopelessly in love with another girl who had little to no interest and only wanted to pick his brain for her script.”

Emily was considered a fitting addition to the cast as, much like the main quartet and two of the series’ girlfriends, she also had a scientific background.

On the other hand, Claire was introduced as a bartender and would-be screenwriter with few interests in common with new boyfriend, Raj.

He quickly realises this, and then briefly gets back together with Emily after she buys him an expensive sextant as a Valentine’s Day gift.

Unfortunately, their revived romance falls apart again when Emily appears to have become much more manipulative.

The fan continued: “The girls are acting like she’s manipulating Raj by giving him an expensive and thoughtful gift even though there’s been no indication that she pushed him to do things he didn’t want.”

While Raj and Emily’s relationship was perceived as incompatible, many fans criticised the break up as a clumsy way to introduce more love interests.

Another viewer hit out at the show’s writers and replied: “The creators hate Raj the most and made him the biggest loser and punching bag.”

To add insult to injury, Jim Parsons left the series before the planned two further seasons could go ahead, leaving Raj in relationship limbo.

Some viewers are hoping the cast will eventually return for a reunion special, which could potentially patch things up between Raj and Emily.

The Big Bang Theory seasons 1-12 are available to stream on Netflix.
