'The Umbrella Academy': Will This Character's Death Cause Big Problems for the Hargreeves in Season 3?

Season 2 of The Umbrella Academy was a violent one. Many characters were killed off throughout the season, but there was one death that could make for a world of trouble for the Hargreeves. While a third season has yet to be confirmed by Netflix, fans are still curious about what this death from season 2 could mean for the Hargreeves siblings in the future.

[Spoiler Alert: Spoilers for season 2 of The Umbrella Academy ahead.]

Season 2 introduced several new timelines

The Hargreeves siblings are no strangers to time travel. Their brother, Number Five (Aidan Gallagher) can manipulate space and time, which allowed them all to end up back somewhere in the 1960s in season 2.

While each sibling was busy exploring their timeline between 1960 and 1963, they all end up back together and forced to stop a new apocalypse, which had been moved up from the previous end of the world in 2019.

At the end of the season, the Hargreeves entered into yet another timeline — one where Sir Reginald (Colm Feore) was still alive, and the Umbrella Academy didn’t exist. Instead, he ran the Sparrow Academy, at which Ben Hargreeves (Justin H. Min) appeared to be the lead.

The Commission was responsible for preserving the timeline

The Commission — referred to as the Temps Aeternalis in the source material for the show — is the overarching villain in The Umbrella Academy. But that’s because the Handler (Kate Walsh) was in the driver’s seat.

The Handler was behind everything evil that The Commission ordered. But as Screen Rant pointed out, her villainy had nothing to do with The Commission’s real purpose: to preserve the timeline.

Yes, that involved ordering assassinations, but overall, The Commission’s main goal was always to preserve history.

The Commission ceased to exist at the end of ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 2

In the season 2 finale, Vanya (Ellen Page) essentially wiped The Commission’s existence from the planet with her powers. Later, the Handler was killed by one of the Swedes, who realized his brothers’ deaths were on her hands.

That left Herb (Ken Hall) and Dot (Patrice Goodman) in charge of The Commission — but how much of The Commission’s agents were left? Hundreds were wiped out in the final episode. And Five had destroyed the board of directors earlier in the season, following the Handler’s direct orders.

With the Handler gone and Herb’s gentle hand in charge of The Commission, what does that mean for the potential timeline in season 3?

The Commission is dead — now what?

With The Commission gone, fans are wondering what that could mean for a new season of The Umbrella Academy. Will the Sparrow Academy become the new villains? Will Herb and the reformed Commission become an ally to the Hargreeves siblings?

What’s more, what kind of chaos will the timeline be in? Herb broke a big rule in letting the Hargreeves siblings go back to 2019 — they come into direct contact with their presumed doppelgangers. What kind of problems will these paradoxes create for them?

With the existence of the Sparrow Academy comes the possibility for other timeline changes. After all, the missions that The Commission’s agents were going to be tasked with from 1963 on ceased to be completed. How will those alterations to history impact the Hargreeves? Fans will have to wait to find out.
