Corrie Geoff’s most ‘brutal’ scenes had to be cut because they went ‘too far’
Coronation Street star Ian Bartholomew forced soap bosses cut the most `brutal’ scene from his coercive control storyline – fearing it was unsuitable for family viewing.
The actor – who plays manipulative monster Geoff Metcalfe – has revealed he refused to say some of the lines scriptwriters penned for his character because he felt they had gone "too far".
His protest meant the scene had to be re-written.
Ian, 66, has admitted his character’s treatment of his wife Yasmeen Nazir – played by his real life pal Shelley King – in the show has been so brutal his 12-year-old cannot bear to watch.
He said his son "couldn’t quite get his head around" his shocking on-screen behaviour towards 64-year-old Shelley even though he knew his dad was only acting.
Ian told Cheshire Life magazine he refused to deliver the `"harrowing" lines bosses had written in to one of the show’s most hard-hitting scenes as he did not feel comfortable acting it out.
He refused to reveal the details of the deleted scene, but he said he felt Corrie’s legendary creator Tony Warren would have backed his decision.
"My job is to interpret what the writers give to me," he said.
|Tony Warren said, 'act it the way you want them to write for you'.
"And that is what I have tried to do."
Ian has hinted that wicked Geoff’s controlling days may be numbered.
"We love to hate a baddie and see someone like Geoff get his comeuppance," he has said.
"So I suspect that he will.
"Let’s be honest – Geoff is going to get it."
Geoff has already been outed as a domestic abuser over recent weeks, with even his son Tim Metcalfe (Joe Duttine) finally realising what his dad has been doing behind closed doors.
Whilst Geoff has managed to escape justice whilst his wife rots in jail, it seems it won't be long before he finally gets his comeuppance.
Corrie continues on Monday at 7.30pm on ITV.
