AMC hit series The Walking Dead might be wrapping up, but the show will be giving fans a little bit more with six extra episodes shot for season 10. The latest outing was intended to finish with its climactic finale involving Beta’s (played by Ryan Hurst) attack on Alexandria and the communities, however, there will be some further instalments after this. Fans may be wondering when these new episodes are going to be hitting screens and why the show isn’t on this week.
Why is The Walking Dead not on this week?
The Walking Dead’s official season 10 finale has now aired after a delay of several months due to the coronavirus pandemic with post-production incomplete.
Once the finishing touches were put on the finale, AMC and FOX UK in Britain aired the long-awaited battle.
The episode aired on October 4 on AMC in America and on FOX UK on October UK for those on this side of the Pond.
This means there is no new completed material for AMC to air and fans will have to be patient.
The six new episodes are in the works with the cast and crew busy at work on them now.
These forthcoming instalments are expected to air at some point in 2021 but no premiere date has been announced yet.
These episodes are going to be filmed in compliance with COVID-19 restrictions in place.
While there’s no firm date for when these episodes will be screened, it could be around February when The Walking Dead traditionally airs its midseason premieres after its Christmas hiatus.
Season 11 is expected to then be arriving in autumn 2021, perhaps around October like previous runs but this is all of course coronavirus-dependent.
Daryl Dixon actor Norman Reedus has already confirmed work has started on the six new episodes after the star shared a shot of himself on Instagram in costume.
Speaking at Comic-Con earlier this year, Kang said of the bonus episodes: “COVID has disrupted a lot of things for every workplace, including ours.
“The writers’ room for season 11 has been going remotely for the past few months.
“We haven’t been able to start production, but we’ll get back to work as soon as we safely can.”

She continued: “We will not be airing season 11 episodes this year as we normally would in October.
“But we’re excited to announce an extended season 10 and there will be six extra episodes to follow the finale and those will run in early 2021 if all goes well.
“We’re working on those now and we’ll have more to share soon… Basically it’s an extension of episodes beyond the finale.”
These new episodes are going to be “deep dives” into certain characters and will be less about the action and more an exploration of some of the big figures of The Walking Dead.
Kang told Deadline how the new episodes had been “fun” and yet a “challenge” at the same time.
There will be stories featuring Daryl and Carol Peletier (played by Melissa McBride) as well as Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie Rhee (Lauren Cohan).
While the episodes would be intensely character-driven, they would also be building towards the final outing.
Kang said: “Then, you know, the plan is to keep driving forward into season 11, like while everything is pumping for these six right now.
“The writers’ room is hard at work planning the final big arc that will lead to the series end.”
Reedus went on to say: “Also, I think after such an epic battle at the end of this season I think you need some breathing room.
“I think people need to exhale and take a look around them, and I think that’s what’s happening now.”
He added: “I’m sure it’ll ramp back up again but right now it’s kind of an introspective exhale sort of a feel, which is nice. It’s a nice tone.”
