Mike Glennon almost ruined the Jacksonville Jaguars’ tank. And apparently, coach Doug Marrone liked it.
The veteran Glennon will get the start at quarterback Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings, Marrone announced Wednesday. The Jaguars are sticking with Glennon even though season-opening starter Gardner Minshew’s fractured thumb is healed.
Jacksonville’s quarterback situation is of major interest to Jets fans. If the Jets (0-11) win a game, they will slip behind the Jaguars (1-10) atop the 2021 NFL Draft order. It’s a two-team race in the Trevor Lawrence Sweepstakes – and the Jets’ best bet for securing the generational quarterback prospect is to go winless.
In reality, the best-case scenario for the Jets is for the Jaguars to win one more game so they can avoid dubious history by winning once and still keeping the No. 1 pick.
So, is starting Glennon a move for or against tanking?
Making his first start since 2017, Glennon threw for 235 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions as the Jaguars fell just short of upsetting the Cleveland Browns last week. He quieted those who thought starting Glennon was a definite sign of giving up.
Minshew won the season-opener to improve his career record to 7-6, but he lost his next six starts before the injury. He completed 65.9 percent of his passes with 13 touchdowns and five interceptions.
“Minshew Mania” is a mustached phenomenon, but it’s difficult to believe that Marrone isn’t desperate for a win. The Jaguars fired general manager Dave Caldwell earlier this week and ownership only guaranteed Marrone’s job security through the end of the season, leaving his future up to the new front office.
Marrone likely will be out either way, but losing the next five games certainly won’t help his resume. When Minshew first went down, the Jaguars started rookie sixth-round pick Jake Luton, who struggled mightily. So, Glennon was the third choice who became the first choice.
“We just feel like he gives us the best opportunity [to win],” Marrone said. “Thought he did some really good things last week and hopefully we can build on them and move forward.
“He’s been there. He has experience. He showed that he can protect the football. He showed that he can make throws, take shots. Has some accuracy. I think that he’s been practicing well and went in there and played well. Like I told him, ‘Hey we expect you to play better this week.’”
