Coronation Street has third clean sweep of soap awards in less than two weeks

Coronation Street has picked up all soap prizes at the TRIC Awards, making it the ITV soap’s third clean sweep at an awards ceremony in less than two weeks!

The popular serial fought off competition from Emmerdale, Casualty and EastEnders to pick up the win for Soap of the Year.

Shelley King, who portrays Yasmeen Nazir, was awarded the trophy for Soap Actor. Fellow cobbles star Jane Danson, who plays Leanne, and EastEnders star Danny Dyer were also nominated.

Corrie’s Executive Producer told Metro.co.uk: ‘What an amazing day for everyone connected to Coronation Street. I am beyond thrilled and on behalf of our incredibly hard-working team, I would like to thank TRIC for recognising the passion and perspiration that have gone into the last twelve months.

‘I am also thrilled with Jane’s nomination and delighted for Shelley with her win. These two exemplify everything good about our show: talent, hard-work, team spirit and total dedication to making excellent television.’

This double victory at the TRIC Awards, as noted above, is Corrie’s third clean sweep this month, having triumphed at both the TV Choice Awards on Monday September 6, and again at the NTAs last week, picking up every soap award on offer at both ceremonies.

What an achievement!

Sally Carman, who plays Abi Franklin, picked up the victory for Best Soap Actress at TV Choice, while Roy Cropper star David Neilson won Best Soap Actor.

At the NTAs, meanwhile, Mollie Gallagher – who plays Nina Lucas – won Best Serial Drama Performance, and dedicated her win to everyone who ‘doesn’t fit the mould’.

Sam Blakeman actor Jude Riordan won Best Newcomer, a category that featured the likes of EastEnders’ Rose Ayling-Ellis, Hollyoaks’ Rhiannon Clements, Emmerdale’s Emile John and Casualty’s Olivia D’Lima.

It’s no surprise that Corrie has brought home so much gold, given how spectacular the show has been over the past year.

The long-running serial aired the culmination of the hard-hitting coercive control storyline, that saw Geoff Metcalfe (Ian Bartholomew) bully wife Yasmeen for the best part of two years.

It also celebrated it’s 60th anniversary back in December, with a special hour-long instalment that saw the residents of the eponymous street band together to save their beloved cobbles.

Seb Franklin’s (Harry Visinoni) demise at the hands of Corey Brent (Maximus Evans) has had the nation talking over the past few months, as has the subsequent trial.

Corey violently killed Seb back in May, when he and mates Eli and Jay set upon Seb and girlfriend Nina Lucas in a brutal hate crime attack.
