Taylor Swift Calls Out Justin Bieber's Manager Scooter Braun — What Happened?
Another day, another celebrity feud for Taylor Swift. But this time, she’s not calling out another artist — she’s angry at Scooter Braun, a former talent manager turned music company executive and owner. Braun is known for helping to launch the careers of many celebrities, but arguably the act he’s most closely associated with is Justin Bieber. Here’s what Swift is saying to Bieber and Braun.
The recent drama started with a Tumblr post
On June 30, 2019, Swift took to Tumblr to share some upsetting news. Now that her former label, Big Machine Records, has been acquired by Braun’s company, he owns the rights to the master recordings of all of her albums through Reputation. This made her angry because Braun’s clients, including Bieber, Kanye West, and his wife, Kim Kardashian have bullied her in the past. She shared the above Instagram post as an example.
In her post, Swift addressed how Scott Borchetta of Big Machine knew about her experiences with Braun, writing, “He knew what he was doing; they both did. Controlling a woman who didn’t want to be associated with them.” She closed by writing, “I will always be proud of my past work. But for a healthier option, Lover will be out August 23.”
This was Bieber’s response
Bieber responded swiftly on his own Instagram. He apologized for “that hurtful Instagram post,” which he called “distasteful and insensitive,” referring specifically to the caption that read “Taylor Swift what up” (which he has since deleted). However, Bieber said that Braun “didn’t have anything to do with it.”
He continued, writing that “Scooter has had your back since the days you graciously let me open up for you.” Bieber wrote that the post “wasn’t fair,” adding that “Scooter and [I] would love to talk to you and resolve any conflict, pain or [or] any feelings that need to be addressed.” He concluded by writing, “I usually don’t rebuttal things like this but when you try and deface someone [I] loves character [that’s] crossing a line.”
Are Bieber and Swift friends?
As Bieber wrote, he and Swift go way back. They performed together at Jingle Ball in 2009, and then Bieber opened for Swift as part of her Fearless Tour in 2010. This is around the time that Bieber began dating Selena Gomez, who was then already close friends with Swift.
In 2011, the three of them sat together at the Teen Choice Awards in August, and then again at the American Music Awards in November. But other than that, they haven’t really been seen interacting — unless you count the time backstage at the Billboard Music Awards in 2013, when Gomez, who was walking with Swift, stopped to talk to Bieber, and Swift stuck her tongue in disgust.
Braun’s wife also responded to Swift’s post
Bieber wasn’t the only one frustrated that Swift was talking about Braun negatively. The executive’s wife, Yael Cohen, responded with her own Instagram post, in which she denied that Swift found out “with the world.” Cohen wrote that “the world has watched you collect and drop friends like wilted flowers.” She captioned her text post, “@taylorswift, I’m here to talk privately anytime.”
