Former Strictly-pro Brendan Cole will be taking to the ice in this year’s skating competition. The ballroom dancer is set to make his long-awaited debut during Sunday’s launch show. Having been partnered up with skating-sensation Vanessa Bauer, the pair have trained intensely together over a period of weeks. In an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk and other media, the 45-year-old performer had opened up about the “embarrassing” injury he sustained while in training.

Speaking ahead of his skating debut, Brendan confessed: “You’re going to have accidents and they happen constantly.

Although the former judge has no issue with taking the odd tumble on the ice, he expressed how landing on the same place again can be painful.

He pointed out: “You don’t land on a bruise that’s already been bruised [for] three weeks, or even three days before, that really hurts.

“I concussed myself on the first day which was very embarrassing, but thankfully that was about eight weeks ago so [I’ve] fully recovered and [I’m] cracking on.

Shortly after Brendan had been confirmed on the ITV show, the Just the Two of Us star had received some backlash from viewers who claimed he could have an advantage over other contestants, having already mastered the art of dance.

The Ballroom and Latin dancer remarked: “There are expectations but I think we are all starting at a point…we will all be at a different level, with a different level of skating [and] different dancing abilities.

Nonetheless, the former BBC dancer admitted: “There are many things that are going to put the expectations and pressures on [and] I’m embracing the dancing side of it.

Throughout his time on Strictly, the TV personality was partnered up with the likes of Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Lulu, Charlotte Hawkins and Anastacia, to name a few.

During his time on Strictly, the New Zealand born professional would occasionally show his competitive streak.

When asked whether he planned to bring his fiery side to the contest, Brendan explained: “I suppose that’s a misunderstood thing really, I’m never driven to win this.

“I’m not here to win the show…I want to be an amazing skater and as I said to my partner, Vanessa, I said, ‘I would love to look like I’m as good as you’, I know it’s never going to happen, she has 25 years of experience of this, I have none.

While dicussing his partner Vanessa, the star gushed: “I would love to emulate what she’s doing.”

Although he claimed to have no intention of winning this year’s series, he added that he did wish to make it to the final.

He chirped: “Trust me, I’m not here to win but I do want to be there at the end.

“I want to be there week on week on week, I make no bones about it,” he added.

Later on, Brendan spoke about his Strictly co-star Oti Mabuse, who will make her judging debut over the weekend.

Brendan praised the Dancing on Ice newcomer, he said: “I think Oti is going to be absolutely amazing.

“She’s a phenomenal person on and off the dance floor [and] she has great dance experience which she will bring to the show.

“I think that she’s going to make an incredible judge, her personality is larger than life and she’s a great friend of mine.

“So I’m really excited for her and likewise, she’s excited for me with the various conversations we’ve had about this since it’s all been announced,” he concluded.

Dancing on Ice will return on Sunday airing on ITV.
