Piers Morgan celebrates as 'cheat' Novak Djokovic loses Australia appeal
Piers Morgan has applauded the Australian Government for rejecting Novak Djokovic’s last-ditch appeal against his deportation.
The tennis star was hoping to defend his title at the Australian Open next week but found himself arrested and detained over an issue with his visa.
Djokovic claimed he was able to travel to Australia despite the country’s strict Covid rules due to a health-related exemption. However, after a whirlwind week of reversed decisions, a court has for a second time ruled that Djokovic’s visa must be cancelled.
Reacting to the news on Sunday morning, Piers tweeted: ‘BREAKING: Covid rule cheat, immigration form liar, & anti-vaxxer icon Novak Djokovic loses final appeal against deportation & will be thrown out of Australia without being able to compete in Aus Open. Good. ’
Piers previously condemned Djokovic when the scandal unfolded last week, and tweeted: ‘So, you lied on Australian immigration forms (and have now chucked some poor aide under a double-decker for it), brazenly broke Serbian covid rules, and deliberately endangered other people’s health.
‘Yet you have the gall to moan about “misinformation” ?’
Djokovic addressed the latest outcome in a brief statement and said: ‘I will now be taking some time to rest and to recuperate, before making any further comments beyond this.
‘I am extremely disappointed with the Court ruling to dismiss my application for judicial review of the Minister’s decision to cancel my visa, which means I cannot stay in Australia and participate in the Australian Open.
‘I respect the Court’s ruling and I will cooperate with the relevant authorities in relation to my departure from the country.
‘I am uncomfortable that the focus of the past weeks has been on me and I hope that we can all now focus on the game and tournament I love.
‘I would like to wish the players, tournament officials, staff, volunteers and fans all the best for the tournament.
‘Finally, I would like to thank my family, friends, team, supporters, fans and my fellow Serbians for your continued support. You have all been a great source of strength to me.’
