Crystal Palace 1 Liverpool 3: Controversial penalty secures key win for Reds in title race as Eagles threatened comeback
LIVERPOOL did what they could to keep up the pressure on Premier League leaders Manchester City.
The Reds swept aside Crystal Palace with a controversial late penalty to triumph 3-1 at Selhurst Park.
That cut the deficit with City to nine points after their surprise draw with Southampton on Saturday – and Liverpool still have a game in hand.
Overhauling Pep Guardiola’s men from here still looks an almost impossible task, but three points against the tricky Palace is an opportunity well taken for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
First-half goals from Virgil van Dijk and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain meant the visitors were in control going into the break.
A strike from Odsonne Edouard on 55 minutes gave Palace a sniff, but Liverpool wrapped up the victory via a contentious Fabinho spot-kick.
Appeals for a penalty after a challenge on Diogo Jota were waved away, only for referee Kevin Friend to change his mind after reviewing footage.
