My wife had dementia and said some really terrible things to me before she died

DEAR DEIDRE:  I LOST my wife three months ago.

I loved her dearly but she had dementia and changed so much in her last few years. She was 76 and I am 78.

She was a kind and caring woman but became angry and verbally abusive.

She said some terrible things.

I try to remember the good times but all I can think of are the nasty comments she made.

I knew it was because of her illness but I’m not coping well.

DEIDRE SAYS: Dementia is such a cruel illness. Your loss and the hurt her illness caused are still very raw.

In time it will become easier for you to remember all those good years and the happy experiences without them being clouded by the recent past.

It can help to write down the bad memories as they come up and put them away in a box you then firmly shut.
