I’m a celeb plastic surgeon – bad habits that make you look older, from makeup to what you eat

A PLASTIC surgeon is warning about the surprising bad habits that might be making you look older.

Dr. Monica Kieu practices in Beverly Hills, California, where her clientele includes the super-rich – but she's sharing some of her most valuable anti-aging tips for free.

The facial plastic surgeon offers up her advice on TikTok in an ongoing series called "Bad habits that make you age faster."

In one of her most viral clips, she warns that chugging down energy drinks is a no-no for lasting youthful looks.

"They're a combination of a lot of sugar, which has been known to cause premature aging by breaking down collagen, and caffeine, which is really dehydrating."

In fact, there are lots of foods and drinks that contribute to aging, including anything spicy.

"There are health benefits to capsaicin, which is the compound in chili peppers that give them hat spicy kick. But spicy foods have been linked to breakouts.

"In some people who are sensitive, spicy foods can trigger inflammation, redness, [and] even broken blood vessels in the skin," she said.

Meanwhile, processed meats like bacon or hot dogs "contain a lot of sodium, which is dehydrating for the skin."

"Saturated fats and sulfites can all lead to inflammation, which will weaken the body's collagen and cause wrinkles," she explained.

A high-fat diet with fried foods, hydrogenated oils, and trans fatty acids can also be aging, she said, because they've been proven to increase free radicals in your skin.

"[That] encourages skin breakdown and wrinkles. They also increase inflammation, which can lead to breakouts and makes your skin more vulnerable to UV radiation," she warned.

Other bad habits include drinking too much alcohol and crash dieting to lose a lot of weight quickly.

Makeup and skincare choices can also cause skin to age faster, according to Dr. Kieu, who urges followers not to pop their pimples, skip sunscreen, or exfoliate too often.

She says that applying eye makeup too "aggressively" can wreak havoc on your skin.

"The repeated tugging and pulling on your delicate and thin eyelid skin can eventually lead to collagen breakdown and wrinkles."

She also cautions against using skincare products with fragrances in them, explaining that the fragrances are "totally unnecessary" and "if you're sensitive to fragrances, it can make your acne, hyperpigmentation, rosacea, or eczema even worse."

Using the wrong products for your skin can also make skin conditions worse, or even cause new problems like inflammation and scarring.

Dr. Kieu also has some bad news for allergy sufferers: Not getting those symptoms under control can cause permanent skin problems.

"The swelling and puffiness around your eyes can lead to dark circles, and constantly itching around your eyes and your nose can cause fine lines and wrinkles," she said.

Perhaps the hardest habit for most people to break is getting in too much screen time – but Dr. Kieu says that the blue light emitted by devices can cause age spots, fine lines and wrinkles, and redness.

Sunscreen can help, as can using dark mode when that's an option.
