Punters utterly gobsmacked at one of a kind race that sees 999-1 in-running winner after TWO spectacular jockey unseats | The Sun

PUNTERS were left totally gobsmacked after a 999-1 in-running winner benefitted from sheer carnage at the end of a race.

Rectory Oak looked beaten by miles turning for home but was the only horse to finish after two spectacular unseats.

Five horses started the 2m5f handicap chase at Newton Abbot on Sunday.

And what otherwise would have been a fairly unremarkable contest will go down in history as one of the most ridiculous after chaos unfolded right at the death.

By the time Brendan Powell went off the bridle on Rectory Oak, Dindin and Mister Allegro were already cruising clear three from home.

By this point, 9-2 Arizona Glory and 18-1 Lure Des Pres had already been unseated and pulled up respectively.

Looking totally beaten, Rectory Oak, who was sent off 15-8 for trainer Joe Tizzard, drifted to 999-1 on the Betfair Exchange.

It looked for all the world like Philip Armson on Dindin and Rex Dingle on Mister Allegro had it between them.

But 9-2 Mister Allegro blundered two fences from home, sending Rex Dingle straight into the air before crashing to turf.

With the race at his mercy, all 5lb claimer Armson had to do was safely navigate the final fence.

It should have been a fairly simple task given his massive lead over Rectory Oak.

But the 7-4 favourite got it totally wrong and trainer David Pipe watched on in horror as his surefire winner finished in a heap.

That left the coast clear for Rectory Oak to simply saunter home and win as the last horse standing.

Punters could not believe what they had witnessed, with the good news being all jockeys and horses were unhurt.

One said: "This is a different version of the tortoise beating the hares."

Another commented: "Firstly, glad everyone is OK. But I was laughing so hard, this was like a comedy sketch this race."

One comment read: "Absolutely bonkers! Wow."

A fellow punter wrote: "If you backed that 'winner' you've just made off like a bandit. Unbelievable."

While another possibly summed up the thoughts of many when saying: "What a stupid race."

Another post read: "How fuming would you be?! That’s unreal both unseating like that. Bet the jockey on the winner couldn’t believe his luck."

Winning jockey Powell joked: "It was never in doubt!"

On a mad weekend of racing, punters at Cartmel ran for their lives after a horse crashed through a barrier.
