A pensioner who died alone with 'no one in the world' had £100,000 in the bank, it has emerged.

George ‘Geordie’ Walker, who died at Belfast Royal Victoria Hospital last week, will be laid to rest beside his family after being saved from a grave next to total strangers.

Kate Tannahill was the 91-year-old’s only visitor after he was found collapsed at his home in East Belfast when she called 999 out of concern on July 5.

Despite her appeal for any relatives to get in touch, Geordie took his last breath alone, reports Belfast Live.

But it has now emerged that the former shipyard worker who lost his parents and sister Lily decades ago, died a wealthy man.

Kate said: “We were surprised he had all these bank accounts because he lived a very simple life.

“His mum had a penny policy out for him from he was one, that’s 90-years ago, so God knows how much that would be worth now.”

It is understood Geordie had in excess of £100,000 spread across a number of banks, which will go to “the Crown” if no living relatives are found.

Kate said a solicitor is now dealing with his estate, while the tea bags, non-perishables and bags of sweets found at his home will be donated to local foodbank.

“I just wanted to make sure that he had a decent funeral,” she added.
