Ellie Goulding admits she was traumatized by unfounded rumors that she had cheated on Ed Sheeran with Niall Horan.
“You know, completely honestly, it caused me a huge amount of … stress is not the word. It caused me a lot of trauma, actually,” the “Lights” singer told the Mail on Sunday’s You Magazine.
Goulding, 36, insisted she and Sheeran, 32, never dated, but she defended him over longstanding rumors that he wrote his 2014 song “Don’t” about her, saying he has the right to use whatever he wants as inspiration for his music.
“It’s fascinating how many people are interested in that,” she added. “It happened nine years ago.”
Still, Goulding confessed to having a hard time coping with her dating life being scrutinized by the public.
“How old were we, 23? I envy the fact that my friends just spent their 20s having flings and one-night stands and what every twentysomething goes through in private,” she said. “But every single thing I did was written about. I was made to feel like a terrible person, and I really struggled with that because I know I’m not.”
The “Love Me Like You Do” songstress even shared that she has “of course” talked it over with the “Shape of You” crooner to move past the drama — unlike some fans.
“It is in the past, and we’re friends. We’re adults,” she told the publication.
Goulding added that the rumors caused so much stress that she wound up taking a step back from her career for five years.
“I can laugh about it now, but it changed things for me,” she said. “I became kind of reclusive. I didn’t want to perform. … It was nothing, and it was private, and it caused me such a huge amount of grief, and I resent it.”
The “Burn” singer made headlines in January when she took to TikTok to shut down years-old chatter that she had been unfaithful to Sheeran with Horan.
Goulding had posted a video in which she danced to indie band PREP’s cover of Horan’s former One Direction bandmate Harry Styles’ solo hit “As It Was.” A viewer then commented, “Can’t believe u cheated on Ed with Niall, but slay [for real].”
Goulding curtly replied, “False!!!!! But also slay.”
She admitted in the You Magazine interview that she was “really drunk” when she responded to the TikTok troll.
Dating rumors between Goulding and Sheeran first swirled in August 2013 when they were seen holding hands while sitting together at the MTV Video Music Awards.
Though Goulding has long denied they were an item, Sheeran once suggested they were, in fact, a couple.
“I mean, normal people don’t hold hands if they’re just friends,” he told Washington radio station Click 98.9 (via Us Weekly) in September 2013. “It was going on, and now it’s not.”
But the “Perfect” crooner pointed out in May 2015 that he never revealed who the song was about and that the rumors were strictly based off articles with no proof.
“I never let it slip,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “What happened was one of the newspapers in England just printed that it was confirmed when it never was.”
The backlash ultimately led to Goulding taking a break between her third album, “Delirium,” released in November 2015, and her fourth, “Brightest Blue,” which came out in July 2020.
These days, the “Anything Could Happen” songstress is learning how to manage her anxiety and allow herself to dive headfirst into her career.
“I’m trying to be afraid of less. That’s no way to live life. And the joys outweigh the bad things,” she told You Magazine. “I get to play live in London for the first time in a couple of years, and I’m really excited about it. It is anxiety-inducing, but I wouldn’t change it.”
Her next album, “Higher Than Heaven,” is set to be released on March 24.
Goulding married Caspar Jopling in August 2019. They welcomed a son, Arthur, in April 2021.
Meanwhile, Sheeran confirmed in July 2019 that he had secretly married Cherry Seaborn, whom he met in high school. The couple share two daughters: Lyra, 2, and Jupiter, 9 months.
