Liverpool player ratings: Van Dijk and Salah lead the charge but Klopp misses out on title through penalties – The Sun
IT WASN'T to be for Liverpool on Sunday as Jurgen Klopp's men lost the Community Shield on penalties.
Joel Matip had levelled to take Manchester City the distance in an enthralling encounter which saw Claudio Bravo become the shootout hero, saving Georginio Wijnaldum's shot in the 5-4 victory.
The game had finished 1-1 in 90 minutes, Raheem Sterling opening the score with an effort scrambled over the line, Bravo also making a number of saves during Liverpool's second-half pressure.
Here, Sun Sport's Martin Blackburn gives his opinion on the Reds stars out on the Wembley pitch.
ALISSON BECKER – 6
Disappointed to let Sterling shot squirm beneath him but made amends by denying him later on. Couldn't save any pens.
TRENT ALEXANDER ARNOLD – 6
Had plenty of work to do defensively first half but pushed up more after the break.
VIRGIL VAN DIJK – 8
So unlucky with his shot that hit the bar but showed his class to tee up the equaliser.
JOE GOMEZ – 6
Wild tackle on Silva could have been punished – showed his versatility by moving to right back late on.
ANDREW ROBERTSON – 6
Well marshalled by Walker when he tried to get forward but defensively solid.
GIGI WIJNALDUM – 5
Almost anonymous in the first half but improved as Liverpool hit back – saw his penalty saved though.
JORDAN HENDERSON – 6
Skipper pushed his team on in the second half and it was his free kick that led to the equaliser.
FABINHO – 5
Quiet start from the Brazilian but helped Liverpool get on top after the break before he was subbed.
MO SALAH – 7
A livewire throughout but not his day in front of goal – came closest when he hit the post.
DIVOCK ORIGI – 5
Hero of Champions League run did not get much of a chance in front of goal but linked up play well.
ROBERTO FIRMINO – 6
Lovely ball early on to tee up Salah but subdued by his standards and much more to come.
