BBC Breakfast weather presenter Carol Kirkwood was given a warm welcome in the studio after taking a break from the morning news programme.

Sally showed how thrilled she was to have her in the studio once again, as she said: "Morning Carol, welcome back!"

Carol replied: "Thank you Sal, it's good to be back!"

The weather presenter had also given fans the heads up that she would be back on the show, as she shared a snap of herself hard at work, writing: "Good morning," and adding two red heart emojis.

Unsurprisingly, it didn't take long for the compliments to come pouring in, as one person wrote: "Welcome Back Carol and good morning x," while another added: "Good morning. Missed you!"

A third person tweeted: "Morning Carol, nice to have you back."

On her return, Carol issued a warning as she said that Wednesday particularly could have some bad weather, saying: "In comes this heavy rain and widespread gails.

"In land, we're looking widely at gusts of wind of 50 to 60mph, temperatures of 14 to 20 degrees, but if we look at where the strongest winds are going to be, that will be through the Irish Sea on the coast, where easily we could have 60 to 75 mph gusts.

"Locally, we could see more than that, potentially 80mph gusts, which could lead to disruptions with transport for example, you might find cancellations to ferries, something worth checking before heading out."

Jon replied: "Okay, we've been warned. Thank you.."

Carol is sure to have spent some quality time with her new fiance Steve Randall during her rare time off.

The star confirmed the happy news of her engagement last year, and told Hello!: "It was a lovely, sunny day and we had taken a picnic with us, and we were sitting by the river, watching the boats going by.

"I turned to say, 'What's wrong?' He was on his knee, and he proposed. At first, I thought he was joking, but he said, 'No no, I really do mean it, Will you marry me?' I said: 'Yes!! Of course!'"

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC1.
