Matthew Perry revealed in his memoir that he refused to watch Friends because it reminded him of his tough battle with alcohol and drug addiction.
The actor died at his home in California after an apparent drowning, aged 54.
The Hollywood star became an overnight star thanks to his role as Chandler Bing on the hit sitcom Friends.
After the show’s enormous success, Matthew had said that he couldn’t bring himself to re-watch the sitcom, despite it being the show that catapulted him to stardom.
He was very vocal about his battle with drug and alcohol addictions and used his platform to help others who were struggling with addiction.

Matthew opened up about his addiction battle in his memoir Friends, Lovers, and the Big terrible Thing, and admitted that the show reminded him of the tough times he experienced.
Speaking in his memoir, he said: “I didn’t watch the show, and haven’t watched the show, because I could go, drinking, opiates, drinking, cocaine.
“I could tell season by season how I looked. That’s why I don’t wanna watch it, because that’s what I see.”
The film star also commented on how his changing appearance affected his decision not to watch the beloved series.

“I was taking 55 Vicodin a day, I weighed 128lbs, I was on Friends getting watched by 30 million people – and that’s why I can’t watch the show, ’cause I was brutally thin’,” he wrote in his book.
“I had a rule that I would never drink or do drugs while working.
“Because I had too much respect for the five people I was working with. So I was never wasted while I was working.”
Matthew featured on Friends alongside Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer.
The show revolved around six friends in their 20s and 30s who live in Manhattan, New York City.
The series aired on NBC from September 22, 1994, and lasted ten seasons, before its last episode aired on May 6, 2004.
