“It’s actually taken me a decade to talk about it,” said Natasha, who shares two children with her husband Justin Bower.
“I promised myself at the time when I was miscarrying and when I was so desperate to become a mother and make Justin a father and to become a family, that if I ever was successful, I promised myself that I would try and use this to help others. And it’s testament to how difficult I’ve found it that it’s taken a decade for me to actually fulfil that.”
Natasha Kaplinsky admitted she felt “barren as a woman”
Natasha stressed the importance of talking about miscarriages, saying: “It is such a taboo subject, miscarrying. I remember being in my first sonography session waiting to see that magical heartbeat of my baby and the sonographer just stepping aside and saying, ‘Would you like a moment to yourself?’ and that was how he essentially broke the news.

“And actually being in such shock, because I assumed that my pregnancy was going to work because they all do. It is such a taboo subject and people don’t talk about it.”
“I spoke to my family and obviously Justin and we were very lucky that the experience of miscarrying brought us closer, but it does put huge amounts of pressure on lots of relationships,” she added.

The 48-year-old newsreader admitted she felt she could “manage her own disappointment” but that she “desperately, desperately wanted to make Justin a father”. “I felt barren as a woman and I think anybody who miscarries will know that feeling of letting your partner down. For me it was that heartbreak that I was going to take away that joy from Justin,” she said.
“I felt very lonely and devastated, I was trying to hold down a job and keep it out of the public eye,” Natasha continued. “But there are many thousands of women who go through multiple miscarriages and there are solutions, ways to extend your chances of becoming a mother, so I’m not unique in that. But yes, when you are in that experience, you do feel terribly lonely.”
Natasha is set to star in Channel 5 documentary, Miscarriage: Our Story, which airs on Thursday night at 10pm. She decided to take part in the film to give others hope and encouragement.
“It is such a lonely time, it does feel like you’re the only person who’s never going to be successful as it were. The whole point of the film is to try and offer some hope to women and men who are experiencing that repeated grief, and hope that it gives them some encouragement to keep positive and to go forward,” she said.
