The Easy DIY Lip Scrub Recipe You Have to Try

Dry, cracked lips can happen any time of year, but they’re especially common during winter. The right balm can do wonders, but a scrub is what will reset your lips (and ultimately make your hydrating treatments work better). As with the rest of your skin, exfoliating your lips removes flaky, dead skin cells and reveals a smoother canvas—which is especially important when applying all those gorgeous new winter lipsticks. However, the skin on your lips is thin and delicate, so you don’t want to use just any scrub. That, coupled with the fact that you ingest pretty much every ingredient you apply to your lips, makes a good case for making one at home.

We tasked Jana Blankenship, founder of natural hair and skincare line Captain Blankenship and author of the DIY beauty book Wild Beauty, to create a lip scrub recipe that’s effective and easy to make. She delivered—plus, it tastes like chocolate. You’re welcome.

Brownie Batter Lip Scrub Recipe

Ingredients

Directions

Add organic cane sugar, organic coconut oil, and optional organic cacao powder to a bowl and mix into a paste with a spoon. Massage onto your lips, leave on for about five minutes, and rinse off. You’ll be left with softer, more hydrated lips. Use any leftovers to scrub hands or elbows, or store in an airtight container in the fridge for next time.
