A$AP Rocky released from jail in Sweden amid assault case
A$AP Rocky has been released from jail in Sweden a month after his arrest as he awaits the verdict of his assault claims.
The rapper, 30, has been held by Swedish authorities since 3 July following a fight after two men refused to stop following him and his crew around, claiming the rapper’s bodyguard had broken a pair of their headphones.
Several celebrities campaigned against his imprisonment, including President Donald Trump who promised to speak to Swedish authorities to get him freed – and claimed his treatment was more severe due to his skin colour.
According to TMZ, the announcement that A$AP would be freed was met by cheers from onlookers, and he is now able to leave Sweden while he awaits the verdict, due to happen on 14 August.
The other two defendents are also free to leave.
Speaking in a press conference after his release, his lawyer said: ‘I want to let you know this is a great day for Rocky, Vladimir and David.
‘I had a chance to visit them while they were in jail. They showed a lot of grace and dignity. Those of you who watched the trial saw that, saw their demeanour in court, saw how well they performed under very trying circumstances over the past month. I’m proud of all three of them.
‘I just got off the phone with the President of the United States and let him know the men are coming home and will be back in America soon. He’s quite pleased with that result.
‘He’s very pleased they’re home.’
‘Tonight was a great night for Rocky, David and Vladimir, a wonderful night for their families who are reunited now with their sons,’ he added.
‘It’s a very good night for the United States of America, and for the Kingdom of Sweden.’
Rocky had shared video footage of the incident with his followers on Instagram, showing the ‘victims’ refusing to leave him and his team alone as he attempted to diffuse the situation.
Another video later emerged of the fight in progress, but his defence attorneys claimed the six seconds of footage was the only involvement A$AP had in the brawl.
A$AP – real name Rakim Mayers – has been in jail since 3 July along with two members of his entourage, in connection with the physical fight in Stockholm on 30 June, but maintained that they acted in self-defence.
Celebrities from Kim Kardashian to Donald Trump have fought for his release.
They compared his four-week imprisonment to G-Eazy’s arrest for a fight in Stockholm – which doesn’t have a bail system – when the white rapper was released after a matter of hours, while A$AP was deemed a ‘flight risk’.
The President previously stated: ‘A$AP Rocky is a situation in Sweden.
‘Sweden’s a great country and they’re friends of mine, the leadership, and we are going to be calling, we’ll be talking to them, we’ve already started.
‘Many, many members of the African-American community have called me, friends of mine, and said “could you help?”.
‘I personally don’t know A$AP Rocky but I can tell you that he has tremendous support from the African-American community in this country and when I say African-American, I think I can really say from everybody in this country because we are all one.’
