Baz Luhrmanns Elvis Presley Biopic To Premiere At Cannes

Baz Luhrmann‘s Elvis Presley biopic, Elvis, is set to premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

According to Deadline, the biopic, which explores the relationship between the late rock icon and his manager Colonel Tom Parker will air at the 75th Cannes film fest, which is scheduled to run from May 17-28.

The biopic starring Austin Butler in the title role and Oscar-winner Tom Hanks as Parker is set to release in the U.S. on June 24.

Luhrmann co-wrote the screenplay for Elvis along with Sam Bromell, Craig Pearce and Jeremy Doner. The ensemble cast includes Olivia DeJonge as Priscilla Presley, Yola Quartey as Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Luke Bracey as Jerry Schilling, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as B.B. King, Dacre Montgomery as Steve Binder and Kodi Smit-McPhee as Jimmie Rodgers.

Production on the film began in Australia in January 2020 but was temporarily shutdown in March of that year after Hanks tested positive for COVID-19. Filming then resumed in September 2020.

In February, Warner Bros. released the first trailer for Elvis. The trailer featured Hanks narrating as Colonel Tom Parker, giving glimpses of Presley’s early days in Tennessee, his involvement with the Civil Rights movement, and his iconic comeback in 1968.

Hanks’ Parker kicks off the story and the trailer stating, “There are some who’d make me out to be the villain of this here story.”

“We are two, odd lonely children, reaching for eternity,” he proclaims, as he paints a tale of fame and destiny shared by the two men.
