Brad Pitt Pokes Fun at Prince Harry’s Royal Exit in BAFTA Speech
The ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ actor, who didn’t attend the award show in London ‘due to family obligations,’ also pokes fun at his single status with a Brexit joke.
AceShowbiz – Brad Pitt didn’t even have to attend an award event to make headlines. The two-time Golden Globe Award-winning actor grabbed attention once again with his speech at the British Academy Film and Television Arts Awards on Sunday night, February 2 in London.
The 56-year-old won Best Film Actor in a Supporting Role for his role in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood“, but he couldn’t make it to the show due to “family obligations.” His co-star Margot Robbie accepted the award on his behalf and read his speech, in which he joked about his single status and Megxit.
“Brad couldn’t be here tonight due to family obligations, so he asked me to read his response for him,” the Australian actress said on stage. “He starts by saying, ‘Hey Britain. Heard you just became single. Welcome to the club!’ ” He was referring to the U.K.’s decision to leave the European Union which became official this week.
“He then says, ‘Thank you to the Academy for this extreme honor.’ He says he’s ‘always been a bit intimidated over here given the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and the titans that have come before, so this is especially meaningful,’ ” Margot continued.
“He says he is going to name this Harry because he is really excited about bringing it back to the States with him,” Margot also read, as the crowd burst into laughter. She noted, “His words not mine.”
Brad saying he’s going to name his BAFTA Award Harry clearly poked fun at the prince and his wife Meghan Markle‘s decision to “step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent.” The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and their son Archie are currently living in Canada, though recent reports suggest the couple may also spend time in California.
It’s unknown how Harry’s brother Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton, who also attended the BAFTA ceremony, reacted to Brad’s Joke about the 35-year-old prince.
Brad previously became one of the most-talked-about topics on Twitter following his speech at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards for making a “Titanic” joke to his “Once Upon a Time” co-star Leonardo DiCaprio. Later on January 19, he once again gained attention with his sweet reunion with his ex-wife Jennifer Aniston backstage at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
