‘Controlling’ Nick Gordon’s romance with Bobbi Kristina and part in her death
Nick Gordon has died at the age of 30 in what his lawyer has described as a 'tragic end to his troubled life.'
His death comes four years after girlfriend Bobbi Kristina Brown was found unresponsive in a bathtub.
Gordon was found legally responsible for the daughter of the late Whitney Houston's death in a bitter civil case brought by her estate a year later.
He had become a central figure in the Houston family after the legendary singer took him under her wing as an orphan.
Gordon called the legendary singer 'mum' and said she 'treated me like she gave birth to me' though Whitney never formalised the adoption and failed to include him in her will.
In February 2012 Whitney died at the age of 48 after accidentally drowning in a Beverley Hills hotel bathtub.
Shortly after her death, her daughter Bobbi Kristina and 'step son' Gordon came out as a couple.
Their union sparked huge upset between their families, with only Bobbi's grandmother giving them her blessing.
Tragedy struck again on January 31 2015 as Bobbi Kristina was found face-down in a bathtub at the Atlanta, Georgia home she shared with Gordon.
Her body was discovered by Nick and a friend and despite her being revived by emergency crews, Bobbi Kristina lost significant brain function.
The 22-year-old spent the next six months in a coma before dying.
A medical examiner was not able to determine whether her death was accidental or at the hand's of somebody else.
A post-mortem revealed that Bobbi Kristina had a number of drugs – including morphine and cocaine – in her body and bruises to her chest.
Gordon protested his innocence but was found legally responsible for his Bobbi Kristina's death in a wrongful death lawsuit and ordered to pay $36million to Brown's estate.
His lawyers slammed the allegations as "slanderous and meritless". But as Gordon failed to attend two hearings in the civil case, Bedelia Hargrove – the conservator of the Brown estate – was judged the winner by default.
A multi-million dollar filed by the Brown estate also accused Gordon of physically abusing Bobbi Kristina Brown, including knocking out teeth and dragging her up stairs.
It was also claimed Gordon had controlled Bobbi Kristina, positioning himself in a boyfriend role before taking money she had inherited without her permission.
He was banned from attending Bobbi Kristina's memorial service or burial.
After Bobbi Kristina was hospitalised, Gordon made an erratic appearance on The Dr Phil Show where he burst into tears.
He claimed that Bobbi had a "really bad" drug habit after the death of her mother.
"It's unfortunate but at the time it’s the only way we knew how to deal with what happened.
"Regardless of what everybody thinks, I made Krissy and Whitney's last few years on earth as happy as they would be," he said.
"I gave them somebody to trust to, to talk to, to be there, someone genuine."
Dr Phil successfully encouraged him to enter a treatment program for substance abuse but Gordon checked out shortly after.
News of Gordon's death was announced by his lawyer on New Year's Day, who said it was a 'tragic end to Nick's troubled life.'
Joe S Habachy said: "Despite all of the incredible challenges Nick faced over the last few years I can honestly say that he worked hard to hold his head up and stay sober and that he genuinely wanted a happy healthy life with his family more than anything else."
Sources say he had a series of heart attacks and was in intensive care in Florida during New Year's celebrations.
