George Michael could be Christmas No.1 from beyond the grave thanks to new film
Could George Michael finally land a Christmas No1?
OK, in fairness, George contributed to Band Aid’s 1984 yuletide chart-topper Do They Know It’s Christmas?, which kept Wham!’s Last Christmas off the top spot, so he technically did still claim one.
But now a new film inspired by his festive hit could mean the late star clinches a posthumous Christmas No1.
Romcom Last Christmas stars Game of Thrones actress Emilia Clarke as an aspiring singer – who idolises Faith singer George – and Crazy Rich Asians star Henry Golding.
George had reportedly signed up for the idea of the film before his death on Christmas Day in 2016.
The film’s soundtrack will feature a previously unheard six-minute song he wrote and performed – and the movie comes out in November, just in time for the festive season.
Speaking to the BBC yesterday, director Paul Feig described the track as “celebratory”.
He said: “He was putting together his new album when he passed.
"It’s just an absolutely amazing song that I’m so excited the world is going to get to hear now.”
Paul said the song is played in its entirety in the film, and George’s music “underscores” the entire flick.
Emilia plays a Christmas shop employee in the movie, which also stars co-writer Emma Thompson.
