Here Are the Nominees for Best Baffled Reactions to Eminem's Oscars 2020 Performance
In 2020, the Academy realized there’s one truth about getting people interested in awards shows: the times are so hard, and it’s getting even harder. To cheer up the nation, the Oscars marched out one of its past Best Original Song winners for a brief reprisal. Celine? Missing. Adele? Skinny, but absent. Gaga? On tour. Eminem though? Present, bearded, ready. After a montage featuring some of the Best Original Song nominees of years past, Eminem emerged from the middle of the stage to perform “Lose Yourself.” Don’t go and check your calendar. It’s still 2020.
The previously unannounced performance sent the audience into a tailspin, with people equally enamored and confused—some at the same time. The choice was a curious one, considering that when Eminem won the coveted prize back in 2003, he couldn’t be bothered to come to the ceremony to accept his award. Cut to 17 years later, and he’s busting out of the stage, bearded and ready to fight.
Twitter naturally took notice of how exciting and bizarre the performance was, paying respect to the prolific rapper while also asking, “Oh, we’re doing this?” As for who got the immediate meme treatment? Idina Menzel’s confusion tops the list, along with the lack of a poker face on Billie Eilish, who was 11 months old when Eight Mile came out.
And here are the nominees for tonight’s best reactions to Eminem.
