Ian Somerhalder Revealed Whether He Would Have Turned Down ‘The Vampire Diaries’ for a Role in ‘Twilight’ With Nikki Reed

Ian Somerhalder seized the spotlight as Damon on The CW’s The Vampire Diaries. His wife, Nikki Reed, brought Rosalie to life on the big screen in The Twilight Saga. With both projects in the couple’s rearview, Somerhalder opened up about whether he would have traded his role on The Vampire Diaries for a part in Twilight had he been given the opportunity.

Ian Somerhalder dished juicy details on Elle’s ‘Thirst Trap’

Somerhalder appeared on Elle Magazine’s Thirst Trap back in 2019. The YouTube series puts celebrities in the hot seat for a truth or consequences style interview.

Somerhalder took the challenge to field 10 burning questions. He could answer each one truthfully or opt out by taking a shot of a mystery beverage. The catch? Some of the drinks were refreshing cocktails, while others were revolting mocktails.

Thirst Trap provided Somerhalder with a pile of questions on designer notecards. The actor whipped through the stack like a pro, answering without hesitation on most, and choosing to swig drinks for others.

During the segment, Somerhalder pondered some fun ideas, like what it would take for him to do a totally nude TV show. “I would do an entire eight years of a series completely naked in like, the Arctic, which is a little scary for a guy, if we could eradicate ocean plastic,” mused Somerhalder. “Nude, me, forever. No plastic.”

Somerhalder also dished other juicy details about his personal and professional life, including a few tidbits, about his superstar wife, Nikki Reed.

The actor made a hypothetical choice between ‘The Twilight Saga’ and ‘The Vampire Diaries’

One question forced Somerhalder to choose between The Twilight Saga and The Vampire Diaries in a hypothetical situation. The star read the question as follows: “Would you have turned down Vampire Diaries for a role in Twilight?”

Before answering, Somerhalder gave props to the feature film series about the Cullen coven of vampires. He also noted that his connection with Reed might have sparked sooner had he starred alongside her in the franchise. Somerhalder remarked, “Oh, Twilight is what sort of paved the way for the success of Vampire Diaries [and] I would have met my wife a lot earlier.”

After pondering for a moment, Somerhalder declared, “You know, I think I’m going to stick with Damon. Damon was just badass.” He paused before adding, “But I would do it naked if there was no ocean plastic.”

Since Somerhalder answered, he was technically off the hook when it came to the drink associated with the question. Still, his inquisitiveness spurred him to sample the concoction. “Just because I’m curious, ‘cause I love brown liquor or drinks, I’m gonna see what this was,” the actor rationalized before taking a sip.

“Wow,” he said in reaction to the unique flavor. “That is like an electrolyte tar.” For the record, the beverage was a mixture of soy sauce and buffalo soda. Somerhalder explained, “If you are in a desert and you’re dying for lack of electrolytes, and you come across this in a puddle, you would drink it.”
