Judge condemns trolls for ‘vile abuse’ of Rebekah Vardy after Coleen’s Wagatha post
Mrs Justice Steyn has spoken out against the "vile abuse" Rebekah Vardy has been subjected to since Coleen Rooney's original post, where she claimed her fellow WAG's Instagram account was linked to stories about her leaking to the press.
The seven day-long trial took place back in May and after a wait of over eight weeks, Mrs Justice Karen Steyn has now delivered her verdict – announcing that Rebekah has lost.
Speaking out about how some of the public reaction to Coleen's claims back in 2019, Mrs Justice Steyn said: “Some members of the public have responded to the reveal post by subjecting Mrs Vardy to vile abuse, including messages wishing her, her family, and even her then-unborn baby, ill in the most awful terms.
“Nothing of which Mrs Vardy has been accused, nor any of the findings in this judgment, provide any justification or excuse for subjecting her or her family, or any other person involved in this case, to such vitriol.”
Mrs Justice Steyn went on to share that Rebekah's evidence in the trial was "manifestly inconsistent" with other evidence on "many occasions".
In her judgment, she said: “It was evident that Mrs Vardy found the process of giving evidence stressful and, at times, distressing. I bear in mind when assessing her evidence the degree of stress she was naturally feeling, given the high-profile nature of the trial, the abuse that she has suffered since the reveal post was published, and the length of time she was in the witness box.”
She continued: “Nevertheless, I find that it is, unfortunately, necessary to treat Mrs Vardy’s evidence with very considerable caution," as she continued to deliver her judgement.
During the trial back in May, Rebekah's barrister Hugh Tomlinson QC submitted a number of hateful comments she received from trolls in the wake of the allegations in a written argument.
An example of an abusive comment provided by Mr Tomlinson read: "Yo snitch I hope your baby gets put in a microwave and ur husband s**gs some other bird other than snake valley".
Another example read: "You fat ugly rat I genuinely hope you and your baby rot and die an extremely painful death for what you have done…"
Mr Tomlinson also claimed Rebekah's husband Jamie Vardy had been subjected to chants about her at football matches, where football fans could be heard saying: "Jame Vardy, your bird's a grass!"
Rebekah was seven months pregnant at the time the post was made by Coleen.
In his skeleton argument, Mr Tomlinson wrote: "As a result of the post, Mrs Vardy and her family were subjected to abuse and threats.
"She was jeered and heckled at football matches and was the butt of endless jokes and further accusations.
"But the allegation in the post was and remains false: Mrs Vardy had not leaked information about Mrs Rooney or her friends and family to The Sun newspaper from her private Instagram account."
