Michael Owen breaks silence on negative start for Love Island star daughter

Love Island: Meet Michael Owen’s daughter Gemma

Footballing legend Michael Owen had misgivings about his then-teenage daughter appearing on Love Island last year – and he’s now shared all about her rocky road on the show.

“When she first mentioned it to me, I suppose you can understand that I was like, ‘Oh, Gemma, don’t do that!'” the 43-year-old confided.

“The first week was quite negative, but she’d said it would be,” he continued, revealing that she’d warned him she was anticipating hate from the public based on having a famous family member.

“She told everyone who would listen, ‘Do not get upset, know that everyone will hate me straight away, it’s just going to happen, because of who my dad is,'” he explained.

Despite initially “clashing” with his “strong-willed” daughter over her decision to appear, after he’d “calmed down”, Michael soon became confident that she’d portray herself the right way.

“I had lots of belief in her and how she’s been brought up. I wasn’t dreading it in any way. I watched probably half the show!” he revealed.

Gemma soon turned the tables and achieved popularity on last year’s show, eventually clinching the runner-up position along with Luca Bish.

Meanwhile, Michael has revealed that his daughter, now 20, is as outgoing at home as she is on television – and often has a lot to say about his clothing choices.

“Gemma has a very strong opinion on fashion [and] I can’t walk out the door without her saying something,” the football pundit divulged.

“Gemma’s obviously got her own style and own fashion and things like that, but she can’t help but comment if I put something on, like if I’m going out to the races or something like that. I often take style tips.”

She’s often been known to call him out on items of clothing that are “mismatched” and urge him to change his look if she spots something amiss.

However, as of this month, Michael has a ready-made collection of outfits courtesy of his clothing range with high street store Peacocks, which debuted last week.

He’s already divulged a fellow sporting star who he thinks would look fantastic wearing items from it.

“Back in the day when I was younger, I would have looked at David Beckham and thought, ‘Wow! I wouldn’t look good in some of the things that you’re wearing, mate,’ but now I think that my fashion line would suit anyone really,” he mused.

“It’s stylish, it’s classy, so probably I’d like to see Becks in it!”

Michael added: “There’s not one piece in front of me that I thought, ‘I don’t like that, wouldn’t wear it’. The designers and all the team have been absolutely brilliant. We tend to agree on everything.”

The Michael Owen Edit will be available online and across the 340 Peacocks stores nationwide from 4th September 2023. Peacocks offers fashion for all the family at affordable prices (from £9) and great quality. www.peacocks.co.uk
