Micky Dolenz Recalls Enlisting Jimi Hendrix To Open For The Monkees

On the most recent episode of AXS TV‘s “Mixtape,” Micky Dolenz of The Monkees opened up about the experience of touring alongside The Jimi Hendrix Experience back in 1967.

“I’m at the Monterey Pop Festival, and all of a sudden these three guys come on stage in all these psycho-jello clothes and stuff, and they just looked incredible. That was, of course, The Jimi Hendrix Experience,” Dolenz shared.

Having encouraged their managers to book Hendrix to open for them on their forthcoming U.S tour, The Monkees set across the nation along with the group but were soon forced to kill the collaboration, as their fans did not seem to take to Hendrix’ more edgy, psychedelic style.

“God, was it embarrassing,” Mick shared of the experience. “Jimi would amble out onto the stage, fire up the amps and break out into ‘Purple Haze,’ and the kids in the audience would instantly drown him out with ‘We want Daaavy!'”

Meanwhile, Dolenz has joined forces with Christopher Cross, Todd Rundgren, former Chicago frontman Jason Scheff and Badfinger guitarist Joey Molland to tour across the country in honor of The Beatles‘ seminal, “White Album,” dubbed “It Was Fifty Years Ago Today – A Tribute to The Beatles’ White Album.”
