THR reports that the new Minions film is estimated to make $125.2 million at the domestic box office for the four-day opening weekend.
The movie brought in $86 million at the global box office as of Sunday, bringing it’s overall total to over $200.
If you remember, the animated feature was actually supposed to be released in 2020, but was pushed back multiple times due to the pandemic before finally landing it’s final release date.
In addition, Minions: The Rise of Gru is breaking not only pandemic era box office records, but it’s making way for one of the top starts at the domestic box office.
Previously, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 held the record for biggest PG rated-release opening of the pandemic era with $72 million.
For the Fourth of July weekend, Minions is poised to take the top spot in the weekend’s openings.
Other films that hold the biggest Fourth of July openings include Transformers: Dark of the Moon with $115.9 million, Spider-Man 2 with $115.8 million and even Despicable Me 2 with $99 million.
