Paul Mescal, 25, fans were likely in for a shock when they went looking for the Normal People star on Instagram today to find his account wasn’t there. The actor has reportedly quietly quit the social media app after finding it to be a “drain.”
Paul first rose to fame in last year’s BBC hit Normal People where he played Connell Waldron.
His emotional performance alongside Daisy Edgar Jones won him plenty of critical acclaim and made him a star overnight.
At the time Paul was very active on Instagram and was often sharing updates about his life with his fans.
By 2021, he had even landed himself more than one million followers.
However, it seems he has now deleted his account as it is no longer available when you search on the app.
According to The Sun, the star has deactivated his account after it became a “drain.”
An insider told the publication: “Paul deactivated his Instagram account because it just became a drain.
“He felt like he was wasting time on there, reading the comments is no good for anyone’s mental health.
“There are more important things going on in his life and he wants to focus his energy into his personal life and his work, he doesn’t need social media for that.
“He’s a private guy and doesn’t feel the need to share everything online.”
They also added how this may not be the end for the star on social media but he is taking a break.
They continued: “Paul knows it does mean he won’t be able to cash in on lucrative offers for massive brand tie-ins.

“He could have easily commanded six-figure sums for posts on his Instagram account endorsing products, but he just doesn’t feel it is worthwhile at this point.
“He might reactivate his page in the future but he’s enjoying his time away from it.”
Express.co.uk has reached out to Paul’s reps for comment on the decision.
A year on from wowing fans in the adaptation of Sally Rooney’s novel, the actor has been keeping himself busy.
He appeared in the 2020 series The Deceived and has been filming for new projects.
Paul will next be seen in the films The Lost Daughter and Carmen.
He was also recently announced to be joining the Irish film Bring Them Down alongside Tom Burke.
