Rosamund Pike accuses the wellness industry of ‘conning’ the public and controlling women
The wellness industry is ‘conning’ the public and is a way for women to be controlled, Rosamund Pike claimed yesterday.
The actress, 44, said the #MeToo movement had helped women but now they were allowing themselves to be dominated in this ‘different guise’.
She warned this type of lifestyle industry had ‘politicised food and exercise’, and was dangerous.
Ms Pike stars with Hugh Laurie in a new BBC podcast drama People Who Knew Me which includes satirical references to Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle brand Goop in the script.
Ms Pike, a former Bond girl and star of the film Gone Girl, told The Observer: ‘We’re all being conned by the wellness industry.

‘This idea that it’s no longer enough to be healthy and we have to be ‘well’ is something that needs to be interrogated.
‘Yet it’s so seductive because it’s in pursuit of things that people are ashamed to want, like youth, beauty and fitness.
‘#MeToo gave women an opportunity to escape some of the demands put on them.
‘Now, in a way, people are voluntarily flocking back to being controlled but in a different guise by these wellness claims.’
Goop is valued at £198million and has made Ms Paltrow more famous than her acting career.
