Sarah Hyland doesn’t want to hide how her body has changed since her health struggles.
The “Modern Family” actress, 28, took to Instagram Monday to talk about her performance with Jordan McGraw at the Teen Choice Awards Sunday night – revealing it was a conscious decision to show off the bump left behind from multiple kidney surgeries.
“Yesterday I had my first nationally televised performance of a song I did with the amazing @jordanmcgraw. I was terrified. I was excited. There was a PHENOMENAL crowd supporting us the entire way through,” she wrote. “Thank you so much to everyone who watched! Thank you @teenchoicefox for having us!! And a final thank you to my ever changing self confidence for making the decision to not wear spanx and let my (kidney area) shine like the badass (expletive) she is.”
Hyland, who has had two kidney transplants, has been open about her health issues and the challenges resulting from kidney dysplasia, a disease that occurs when the organs do no fully develop while in utero and can lead to chronic difficulty filtering waste from the bloodstream.
After experiencing kidney failure, she received a kidney from her father in 2012. Her transplanted kidney was removed in 2017 and she received a kidney from her brother the same year.
This isn’t the first time Hyland has been open about her styling choices around her surgery bulge, which she said can cause “complete meltdowns in the middle of fittings.”
“It’s this bittersweet moment of, ‘Oh my gosh. I have new life,’ but then also being an actress and being held up to this sort of pedestal of how you’re supposed to look,” she told Self Magazine in 2018.
In February, the actress revealed she wore two pairs of Spanx to the Vanity Fair Oscar Party.
“#funfact I’m wearing TWO pairs of spanx,” she captioned a photo of herself at the event. “Why diet? When you can just hide it!”
After receiving backlash for her post, she tweeted, “When you have two kidney transplants and are on steroids for life get back to me.”
