Selena Gomez sings about hating Justin Bieber in ‘Lose You to Love Me’

Selena Gomez is done with Justin Bieber.

The 27-year-old pop star released “Lose You to Love Me” early Wednesday—along with a black-and-white music video shot entirely on an iPhone—and the song appears to be a Dear John letter to her ex-boyfriend, who has since married Hailey Baldwin.

“You promised the world and I fell for it / I put you first and you adored it / Set fires to my forest / And you let it burn / Sang off-key in my chorus / ‘Cause it wasn’t yours,” Gomez sings, seemingly referring to their 2013 demo “Can’t Steal Our Love.”

“I saw the signs and I ignored it / Rose-colored glasses all distorted / Set fire to my purpose / And I let it burn / You got off on the hurtin’ / When it wasn’t yours, yeah,” she continued.

The pop star’s latest single explores how she had to let 25-year-old Bieber go in order to find self-confidence and self-love, as she sings in the chorus, “We’d always go into it blindly / I needed to lose you to find me / This dancing was killing me softly / I needed to hate you to love me, yeah.”

The “Wolves” singer also appears to reference how quickly Bieber moved on with Baldwin after he and Gomez ended their relationship in March 2018. (Bieber was engaged to Baldwin by July 2018).

“In two months, you replaced us / Like it was easy / Made me think I deserved it / In the thick of healing, yeah,” she sings.

Bieber hasn’t publicly addressed the song, though Baldwin took a screenshot of Summer Walker’s song “I’ll Kill You” and posted it to her Instagram story shortly after Gomez released the track.
